If you use the A2 near Sittard-Geleen, listen up! Rijkswaterstaat is doing major road works at the Graetheide viaduct and Born viaduct. Expect night closures first, then a longer weekend shutdown. Here is the breakdown.
Night closures July 6 to 10:
- Direction Eindhoven (Urmond-Born): closed Monday night July 6 and Tuesday night July 7, each time from 21:00 to 05:00
- Direction Maastricht (Born-Urmond): closed Wednesday night July 8 and Thursday night July 9, from 21:00 to 05:00
- The old Bergerweg near the A2: closed every evening from Monday July 6 through Friday July 10 (19:00 to 06:00)
Big closure near Born July 10 to 20:
This is the big one. A completely new traffic system is being built at the Born viaduct. The work is split into three phases:
- Phase 1 (July 10-12): Aldenhofweg closed, ramps direction Maastricht closed
- Phase 2 (July 12-17): Langereweg closed, ramps direction Eindhoven closed
- Phase 3 (July 17-20): everything closed at the Born junction 🚫
Detour routes will be marked with yellow signs. Expect extra travel time! More info at a2vonderenkerensheide.nl or call free at 0800-8002.
The new traffic system being installed is called a DDI, or Diverging Diamond Interchange. This is an American concept where traffic temporarily drives on the left side of the road at an intersection, allowing left-turning traffic to avoid all crossing conflicts. It is rarely used in the Netherlands and is needed here because the northern section of the Koning Swentibold viaduct at Born will be completely demolished and rebuilt as part of the A2 widening project between Het Vonderen and Kerensheide.
