Great news for anyone who loves a green neighborhood. The municipality of Beekdaelen is teaming up with nature organization Natuurwachter to boost flowers, bees, and biodiversity across the area. The project is called ‘Together for Buzzing Connections’ and the goal is straightforward: make sure bees, butterflies, bumblebees and other pollinators find enough food and safe spots throughout our municipality.
So what is actually happening?
- Wildflower-rich road verges and green strips will be planted to connect villages, nature areas, and the surrounding countryside
- Public green spaces will be maintained differently so flowers bloom longer and insects have more shelter
- A ‘Buzz Brigade’ of volunteers will be formed to monitor pollinators, educate residents, and organize activities for all ages

The project involves partners like IVN, the Limburg Agricultural and Horticultural Association, beekeeper associations, and local contractors. Alderman Peter Janssen calls it ‘an important step toward a greener and more biodiverse Beekdaelen for current and future generations.’
Did you know that the Netherlands is home to more than 350 species of wild bees, but nearly half of them are on the Red List of threatened species? This project in Beekdaelen does not just focus on the familiar honeybee but specifically targets wild bees that often depend on very specific flowers. By creating green corridors between different habitats, they prevent populations from becoming isolated and eventually disappearing entirely.
