Planning a relaxing walk through the Bunder- en Elslooërbos? You might want to check your route first, because several trails are currently closed. But do not worry, there is a good reason for it and people are already working on a fix!
So why are the paths closed? 🌳
- Parts of the forest floor are getting wetter, a process called ‘vernatting’ or waterlogging. This makes trees more likely to fall over unexpectedly.
- Some of the closed paths run through protected forest reserves, where nature is left completely to its own devices. Trees are never cut or pruned here, even when they are weakened.
- A fallen tree has already damaged the metal Hemelse Loper walkway, prompting Staatsbosbeheer (the national forestry service) to close several paths as a safety measure.
In the Hoge Bos area, east of the railway, a trail has been rerouted so you can still safely walk around the forest reserve. You can check the map to see where the reserves are located, marked in green. 🗺️
Staatsbosbeheer is working together with the municipality of Meerssen, the Water Authority, IVN and other stakeholders on a long-term plan. They are hoping to secure provincial funding for new boardwalk paths, so everyone can explore the forest safely again soon. 👟
