If you ever walk past the Akerstraat, things are about to change big time. The municipality of Kerkrade and Nivas Carboon Project B.V. have officially signed a partnership to redevelop Akerstraat 24 through 32a.
So what is happening exactly?
- The current buildings will be demolished
- A brand new apartment complex with 46 homes is coming
- A mix of social housing, mid-range rentals, and homes for purchase
- A small retail space on the ground floor connecting to the Carboonplein
For the people currently living or running shops there: the municipality and Nivas are already talking to all tenants. Your rental contract stays valid and they are working together to find a good solution for everyone. Nobody is being left out in the cold.
When construction actually starts depends on those conversations and the next steps. But the plan is set and the signatures are in. The Akerstraat is getting a whole new look! 🏗️
What makes this project especially interesting is its direct connection to the Carboonplein, named after Kerkrade’s coal mining heritage. This redevelopment is part of a larger strategy to revitalize the entire area around the square, combining living, shopping, and community space to give the city center a real boost.
