Good news if you play sports in Roermond or have a kid in a local club: a brand-new sports hall is likely coming to the ROER College Schöndeln campus. Instead of basic school gym rooms, the municipal board is going for a full-sized multifunctional sports hall, used by students during school hours and by clubs in the evenings and weekends.

- A canteen for after-match drinks
- Official competition matches possible
- Extra space for clubs that are currently squeezed for room
Indoor sports facilities in Roermond are pretty packed right now, and this hall should ease that pressure. Alderman Felix van Ballegooij calls it ‘a unique chance to connect two big goals’: proper sports facilities for residents and future-proof school buildings.
The price tag? An extra 2.8 million euros from the municipality for the bigger floor, tribune, canteen and bathrooms. Alderman Dirk Franssen says it’s still way cheaper than building a separate sports hall somewhere else in town. The city council makes the final call on 9 July.
The construction agreement between the municipality of Roermond and Stichting Onderwijs Midden-Limburg (SOML) was already signed on 26 March. That means the campus plans are well underway, and choosing a sports hall over standard gym rooms is essentially an ‘upgrade’ on top of an existing plan, which is why the additional costs stay relatively low compared to a stand-alone sports hall elsewhere.
