We all know that puppies and kittens are cute, but did you know that baby camels look just like giant stuffed animals? This is something we simply had to share with you. Enjoy the adorable photos below!
On Monday morning, March 2nd, the staff at Kasteelpark Born were pleasantly surprised by the birth of a little camel. Mother Grace had been pregnant for 13 months and is now taking great care of her daughter while making soft grunting sounds. With these sounds, she encourages the little one to stand up and drink milk. It also helps the baby camel learn to recognize her mother’s voice. Did you know that a baby camel can be called both a calf and a foal?

We are now a few weeks down the road, and the little camel has finally been named. Scroll down if you’re curious!

Kasteelpark Born organized a fun campaign where followers and visitors could vote on a name for the baby camel. It truly makes her feel like part of the community. The three names to choose from were: Zahra (meaning: flower, radiant), Amira (meaning: princess), and Rani (meaning: queen). Whether it has anything to do with the popularity of the fashion chain Zara, I don’t know, but the visitors overwhelmingly voted for Zahra! A very fitting choice now that the spring sun is out and the spring flowers are starting to bloom. Mama and Zahra are enjoying the weather while papa Bertil keeps a watchful eye.

The name was officially announced on March 6th, and Kasteelpark Born celebrated in traditional Dutch fashion by handing out beschuiten met roze muisjes (rusks with pink anise sprinkles) to the visitors. Delicious! While the treats are long gone, Zahra is still happily frolicking around the park. So, be sure to take a look if you’re in the area! Click here for the current opening hours and address.
