In the new neighborhood Aan de Vallei in Roermond, the very first street sign was unveiled, and what a special moment it was! The street is named after Ida Janssens, a brave woman who helped people in hiding during World War II and was active in the resistance.
The new neighborhood will eventually have thirteen streets named after women from Roermond. These include women from the resistance, arts, culture, politics, and even the local history of witch trials. The city council unanimously passed a motion because Roermond still had catching up to do when it comes to naming streets after women.
The best part of the unveiling? Four generations of the family came together to witness the moment 🥹. Daughter Jacqueline Brekelmans, now 98 years old, was there too. She said: ‘This feels like recognition for everything my parents did during the war. I am overjoyed that my mother will now live on forever.’
A beautiful tribute to a woman who risked her life for others. Her story now literally lives on in the streets of Roermond. ❤️
