Ever noticed that little orange snail logo? That is the symbol of Cittaslow, and Gulpen-Wittem has proudly carried this quality mark since 2018. It stands for conscious living, quality of life, local products, and genuine care for each other.
Now it is becoming even more visible. The municipality is launching a series of short film portraits featuring their 19 Cittaslow ambassadors. Think local business owners, engaged residents, and community leaders who show every day what this philosophy looks like in real life.
Here is what to expect:
- Short films on Facebook and YouTube
- The first portrait drops Friday, July 10
- Made by Sundog Films (themselves a proud ambassador! 🎬)
- Announced through the Gulp- en Geuljournaal
And here is the cool part: Gulpen-Wittem is not alone. Together with Vaals and Eijsden-Margraten, they form three connected Cittaslow municipalities. That is unique in the Netherlands.
Mayor Nicole Ramaekers: ‘Cittaslow is in the DNA of Gulpen-Wittem. I am incredibly proud of our ambassadors.’

What most people do not realize: Cittaslow originated in Italy in 1999 as a counter-movement to fast living. What makes South Limburg special is that three adjacent municipalities jointly carry this certification, creating a continuous Cittaslow region that is virtually unique across all of Europe. Municipalities must meet over 70 criteria covering environment, infrastructure, local production, and hospitality to earn and maintain the label.
