Big news from the Woonboulevard! IKEA Heerlen is switching to Mijnwater, a clever sustainable energy system that uses warm and cold water from old coal mine shafts to heat and cool the building. From now on, the store runs completely free of fossil fuels.
If you are a regular shopper there, you will not notice a thing. The store stays just as comfortable as always. But behind the scenes, this is a pretty big deal. 🌱
Here is what this switch actually means:
- 306 tonnes less CO2 emissions every single year
- A saving of 1,512 megawatt-hours of gas annually
- Barely any extra electricity use, which matters a lot given the current pressure on the power grid
IKEA has set a goal to run entirely on renewable energy by 2030. The Heerlen store is already at around 80 percent, so this move gets them very close to the finish line.
There is also a bonus for the neighbourhood 💡 The new infrastructure is set up in a way that other businesses on the Woonboulevard can easily connect to it too. IKEA hopes their neighbours will follow their lead soon.
