Sittard-Geleen just got a brand-new book all about the local dialects! It was put together by two language enthusiasts from the municipality, Frans Walraven and Huub Clerx, in collaboration with the RegioArchief. A real treasure for anyone who loves our local language traditions.
Our municipality is home to so many different dialects, and each one tells a story about the history and culture of the neighborhood it comes from. Think of the sounds from Sittard, Geleen, and all the villages and districts around them. This book shows just how rich and diverse all of that really is. 🗣️📖
Alderman Andries Houtakkers put it beautifully: dialects are more than just words. They carry stories, memories, and a sense of belonging. And honestly, we could not agree more!
Great news for those who prefer reading online: all the information is also available on the municipal website. So everyone can easily access it.
The book is really an invitation to all of us: listen closely to the language around you. Dialects are living heritage, something to cherish and pass on to the next generation. ❤️
