There is a new coalition agreement in Meerssen and it touches pretty much everyone living here. Here are the highlights:
Housing
- Affordable housing is the top priority so young people can keep living in local neighborhoods
- Starter loans will continue
- New: flow-through vouchers. These are financial incentives for people living in large homes who would like to downsize but never get around to it. This frees up family homes without building a single new brick 🏠
Tourism
- Meerssen has been falling behind places like Valkenburg and the Heuvelland for years
- The tourism vision will be developed further
- They are looking into the possibility of a hotel in the municipality
- City branding: how does Meerssen position itself between Valkenburg and Maastricht? Think strong community life and gorgeous green landscapes 🌿
Restoring trust
- The municipality has been through a rough period and the new coalition wants to draw a line under the past
- A confidential advisor will be appointed and codes of conduct will be drafted
- More citizen participation: involving residents earlier in decision-making
With a renovated town hall and a new council chamber on the way, it feels like a genuine fresh start.
The flow-through vouchers are a clever workaround for the housing crisis. By financially helping older residents move from large family homes into smaller apartments, scarce housing stock gets freed up without years of construction. It is essentially unlocking hidden capacity in the existing housing market without laying a single foundation.
