It is finally happening! After years of planning, redesigns, and delays, construction of a new cycling and walking bridge over the River Maas has officially started. And it now has a name: the BoBo Bridge. 🎉
So where does the name come from?
- BoBo stands for Boschpoort and Bosscherveld on one side, and Borgharen on the other.
- It also refers to Bobo, a Frankish man from the early Middle Ages. His name was found in rune markings on a bronze buckle discovered in Borgharen. Pretty cool, right?
What does this bridge mean for you?
- Cyclists and walkers get a direct connection between Borgharen and the city center, no more detours! 🚴
- The bridge becomes a key link in the Rivierpark Maasvallei, perfect for beautiful loops along the Maas.
- A new path called the Schutkolkpad will also be built in Borgharen.
The first construction work has already started and the bridge will be assembled in the river this summer. If everything goes according to plan, you can cross it by the end of 2026! The municipality of Maastricht and the province of Limburg are jointly funding this project.
