It is hot and all you want is a refreshing dip. Totally understandable! But hold on a second before you jump in, because not every swimming spot is safe right now.
Waterschap Limburg monitors 38 official swimming locations during the swim season. Currently there is a blue-green algae warning at these spots:
- Dagstrand Fun Valley (Eijsden-Margraten)
- Event Beach Maastricht, part of Fun Valley (Eijsden-Margraten)
- Camping De Oosterdriessen (Eijsden-Margraten)
- Naturistenvereniging De Maasplassen (Maastricht)
- Camping Jachthaven Hatenboer (Roermond)
- Natuurbad De Zeekoelen (Brunssum)
And at BillyBird Park Drakenrijk in Reuver there is a warning for swimmer’s itch.
💡 Tip: always check zwemwater.nl before you go. You will find real-time water quality info and any active warnings per location. That way you know for sure you can enjoy the water safely!
Blue-green algae is not actually algae at all but a type of bacteria called cyanobacteria that can produce toxic substances. Contact with it can cause skin irritation, nausea, and in severe cases even liver damage. Children and pets are especially vulnerable because they tend to swallow more water. Dogs that drink contaminated water can even die from the exposure.
