Hey neighbor, quick heads-up if you drive through Kelpen-Oler regularly. The Kelperbrug over the N280 is closed to heavy traffic starting June 9. That means no trucks, buses, or farm vehicles can cross anymore.
Why? The steel support structure has been weakened by corrosion (basically rust eating away at the metal). Together with the Province of Limburg, the decision was made to play it safe. Follow-up research will reveal the real condition of the bridge.
The good news: 🚑 emergency services and 🚌 public transport can still use the bridge. Regular cars too.
What you will see on the road:
- New traffic signs C7b and C8 are already up
- Traffic controllers helping near the bridge
- Mobile message boards guiding drivers, soon replaced by permanent detour signs
Detour routes for heavy traffic:
- From Eindhoven to Roermond: exit Nederweert, N275, N279
- From Roermond to Weert: N280, N273, ramp Grathem
- From Maastricht to Kelpen-Oler: exit Grathem, N273, N280
- From Weert to Roermond: via A2/A73
Here is something many locals do not realize: the Kelperbrug is a critical link on the N280, one of the busiest east-west connections in Central Limburg. Corrosion of steel bridge structures is a growing nationwide issue in the Netherlands, as many post-war bridges are reaching the end of their designed lifespan simultaneously. The upcoming follow-up research will determine whether the bridge needs repair or full replacement, which could massively impact the region for years.
