Anyone who has walked through Dr. Poelsstraat lately might have already noticed: the iconic artwork by Street Art Frankey, featuring the cheerful ‘Koelepietjes’ (coal-birds), was unfortunately damaged by construction work. Luckily, hard work has been done, and the Koelepietjes are feeling right at home again!
The beautiful sight of these cute little birds with glowing miners’ lamps on their heads is finally complete again. Not only are they adorable, but they are also deeply meaningful to the area due to our local mining history. If you haven’t seen them yet, they are truly worth a visit, so be sure to take a little detour if you’re in the neighborhood!
Do you find these little birds absolutely wonderful? Or do you know someone who would be cheered up by them? From the limited edition of only 500 pieces (a truly unique item!), a few are still available in the museum shops of SCHUNCK and the Dutch Mining Museum. You won’t easily find a lamp this cute that also carries such a special Limburg story. It’s sure to bring a smile to your face every day once it finds a nice spot in your home. Placed next to a plant on your shelf, it looks just like a real parakeet! 😉
Have you become a fan of Street Art Frankey after seeing the Koelepietjes? On April 9th, a documentary about him will be showing at Filmhuis De Spiegel, showcasing how he surprises cities all over the world with work that truly captures the imagination. You can follow the film house’s channels to see if Frank himself will be present.
